Wireless router is the main wireless devices needed, besides the modem, to build a wireless network environment in home or in SOHO. Generally when you sign-up for a broadband internet connection from the ISP, the ISP provides you a modem which is connected direct to one single computer in home either using USB port or NIC adapter. So if you want to build a wireless network, you need to buy a wireless router or access point. How do you know which one is the best wireless router you need?

The term the best wireless router is relative; there are some factors you need to consider in deciding which router is the best for your need. If you have limited budget, you really need to consider the basic requirements which are the best for your need. For example, if you just want to share the broadband internet connection with couple of computers, and other share documents and printer within the household, then you don’t need to buy a high features wireless router such as one which is designed specifically for gamers in mind.

There are many types of Wireless Routers at the marketplace you can purchase, but which one is the best? In selecting the wireless router; some people make the mistake of trying to find the best wireless router. Of course, that’s a moving target as router get better and better with each new model introduction, but what you really need is “The perfect wireless router that is best for your need”. So your target is not the “best wireless router” but “the router that is best for your need”.

Best Wireless router for Internet sharing

Based on the principle of the perfect wireless router that is best for your need, if you just want to build a wireless environment in home to share the internet connection, or just for the portability reason so you can browse the internet with your laptop everywhere within the house wirelessly, you just need an all-in-one device which combines the function of modem, router, and the wireless access point.

If you subscribe for ADSL internet from the ISP which includes the monthly charges for the modem, you can purchase all-in-one device which includes the ADSL modem with the price under $100 such as D-Link DSL-2640B, or you can consider Netgear DG834Gv5 – a DSL Wireless Modem with Wireless -G Router and built-in DSL Modem. Both are wireless router with built-in ADSL modem, including 4-port Switch LAN, wireless access point, and with router/firewall feature for security protection against the internet threats.

Both routers would be suitable for your home wireless environment to share the internet, share the files and printer with several computers in the household. All the requirements you need for building a wireless environment in home with this type of modem-router, a single device for all. This type of all-in-one device would be the perfect wireless router for your need. For Cable Internet, you can consider SBG-900 Cable modem router by Motorola.

Wireless Router for Gaming and HD Streaming

The best wireless router for gaming and HD media streaming are demanded high performance, fast, and reliable networks. Both Gaming and streaming HD video applications demand high-speed networks that capable of delivering high bandwidth-sensitive applications. They should be capable to intelligently manage and automatically prioritize network traffic to better execute bandwidth-sensitive applications including VoIP and multimedia applications. You need a wireless router which has QoS (Quality of Service) technology feature.

The fastest wireless network today is based on 802.11n standards. The final version of draft 802.11n standards. The Wi-Fi Alliance said that the final version of the 802.11n Wi-Fi standard should effectively remain the same as it is in the Draft 2.0 spec. The Wi-Fi Alliance is a trade group that owns the trademark Wi-Fi and owns and controls the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED logo, a registered trademark, which is permitted only on equipment which has passed testing. This 802.11n (wireless –N) technology can deliver the speed of up to 300 Mbps (ideal condition, actual speed may vary) with enhanced technology specific to the manufacturers. They should also feature enhanced wireless technology for optimal range and connectivity such as MIMO technology. MIMO is a technology which uses multiple antennas to coherently resolve more information than possible using a single antenna.

The best wireless router for gaming and streaming HD media should be clear from the source of interference. Common source of radio interference is wireless devices which operate in the 2.4 GHz radio band such as cordless phone, baby monitor, microwave oven, home security and monitoring appliances, garage controller, and so on. Wireless 802.11b/g and wireless 802.11n standards operate in 2.4 GHz radio band too. For a clear radio band, the wireless router should include the dual-band feature which can operate both in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (802.11a) radio bands either selectable or simultaneous. With dual-band, you can stream HD media as well as for gaming in a clear 5 GHz frequency band, less radio interference as in 2.4 GHz band. This will assure a jitter-free and lag-free wireless environment.

Example of the perfect but not the best wireless router for gaming and HD streaming is D-Link DGL-4500 wireless router. DGL-4500 is specifically designed for gamers in mind. It is powered by award winning GameFuel technology which allows you to customize your network settings to prioritize game traffic so others will not hog all the bandwidth while downloading HD media.

Building a wireless network in home or SOHO (Small Office Home Office) is not a very difficult task to do today, even though by someone without computer networking experience. With DSL wireless modem, you can build a wireless network in home easily and securely.

For mostly people without any computer network knowledge, building the wireless network in home is even something that they never imagine before. However, if they know all the requirements to build a wireless network can be replaced by a single all-in-one DSL wireless modem, technical complexities of computer networking, connection, and configuration can be minimized as small as possible.

One of the apparent reasons to build a wireless network in home today is to share the broadband internet connection with many computers in the household. Besides, with the wireless network in home you can browse the internet with your laptop at the pool side, with your Wi-Fi phone or Skype phone – you can make some internet calls anywhere within the house without the need of turning-on the computer, or you can go live game with your XBOX console in the comfort of your living room without the clutter of the wires. All the requirements you need to build a simple wireless network in home or SOHO is a single all-in-one DSL wireless modem. What are actually the requirements to build a wireless network in home?

Firstly, you need a DSL modem. A modem is a digital to analog signal converter and vice versa, and is an interface device between the subscriber premises and the local Telco or the ISP. Generally when you signup for a broadband internet services, the ISP provides you a modem which is connected directly to a single computer using a USB connection or Ethernet connection. A DSL wireless modem includes a built-in DSL modem – the first requirements you need.

Secondly, you need a router or firewall. A router or firewall protects your private internal network from public networks (the internet) against any types of the threats. Typically home routers are powered by the dual-firewall feature – NAT and SPI. Network address translation (NAT) helps you hide the private network from the public network, while the stateful packets inspection (SPI) inspects the incoming packets precisely and thoroughly against any false positive packets. A DSL wireless modem includes the function of dual-firewall – the second requirements you need.

Thirdly, you need a wireless access point. All wireless devices communicate with the wireless network infrastructure using the wireless access point. Access point bridges network devices in the wireless network with the network devices in the wired network. Wireless access points extend your network wirelessly within the wireless coverage. A DSL wireless modem includes the function of the wireless access point – the third requirements you need.

Lastly, you need a LAN Switch that will interface the wireless access point to the wired network. Typically the DSL wireless modem includes a 4-port LAN Switch. With these Ethernet ports, you can also connect the computers directly using the UTP LAN cable; and connect the Ethernet print server to share the printer on the network. The recent products shipped with the 10/100/1,000 Mbps Gigabit port – with auto-sensing Ethernet port. With auto-sensing LAN port, you don’t need to worry about the cable type used, either cross UTP cable or straight-through cable – the system will detect the cable type used and adjust the system automatically.

Typical DSL wireless modem includes the above four functions, a DSL modem, a router / firewall, a wireless access point, and a Switch LAN. By purchasing this single all-in-one device – the DSL wireless modem; you can build a simple wireless network in home or SOHO easily and securely. You do not need to buy separate devices to reduce the complexity of the connection, the configuration, and the setting of the wireless network.

Network Setup and Connection

Since DSL wireless modem is a single device – a single solution in building the wireless network, the connection and configuration is simple. By default, with a single connection to the DSL line – the wireless network will be functional. Off course, with the default setting – no security encryption is applied to the wireless connection. Security feature is not enabled by default.

Connect the Internet port (or the WAN port) of the DSL wireless modem to the phone line (the DSL line). Unlike dial-up connection, DSL internet uses the same line as the phone line without interfering each other; both Internet and voice can work together at the same time. Traditional internet using dial-up modem uses the phone line for Internet connection, but at the same time you cannot use the line for the voice (phone calls) until the internet connection is released. With this single connection, your DSL wireless modem is ready to provide wireless roaming within the house and all the computers (with the Wi-Fi enabled) can connect to the network with a simple configuration and even with a simple plug and play.

Each computer on the network needs an IP address to be able to communicate via the network, so how can you provide and configure the IP address? DSL wireless modem includes a DHCP service which is enabled by default. DHCP server provides and leases the IP address configuration to the computers on the network automatically.

There are many DSL wireless modems available at the market today ranging from devices with 802.11g standards and the latest standard is the draft 2.0 802.11n. Draft 802.11n is the future wireless technology which is not ratified yet, but mostly all the wireless manufacturers have shipped their products using 802.11n standards.
By Ki Grinsing

If you would like to build a wireless network from the scratch, it is recommended to use the best wireless network based devices, using the current wireless technologies available at the marketplace today. The best wireless network should consist of wireless devices and wireless standards which can provide the best technologies in three main areas. Firstly, the wireless devices and standards should provide the fastest wireless network. Secondly, wireless devices and technology used should provide the farthest network coverage. Thirdly, the wireless security standard should provide the most secured network to protect the private network against any types of network threats. The Best Wireless Network in Speed The fastest and the best wireless network available at the market today is 2.0 802.11n standards. This is the latest industrial standards today – the future technology, it was just ratified by the IEEE last Sep 2009. Mostly all the wireless manufacturers ship their lines of wireless products based on this draft and final standards. The recent manufacturers ship their products and claimed that the wireless network can provide the speed up to 300 Mbps. However, this is all theoretical, in a sense, due to the fact that routers never achieve the maximum throughput they’re rated at (802.11b at 11 Mbps and 802.11g at 54 Mbps). Many wireless devices were shipped based on the draft version of 802.11n standards. But this draft version is assured to be backward compatibility with the current industrial standards 802.11b and wireless 802.11g wireless devices, and can be used to fill in the gaps of your wireless network today. Besides, draft 802.11n has been ratified officially as the fastest wireless industrial standards, there will be no hardware changes. The only thing you need to upgrade is the firmware that will be freely downloaded from the official vendor’s websites. Even some vendors design their products with the capability of download the recent firmware automatically when it connects to the internet. Now, the final version of the 802.11n has been adopted by many new wireless devices today. The Best Wireless Network in Network Coverage Selecting the best wireless network should provide the technology with the farthest network coverage. A current technology widely adopted by the manufacturers to provide the farther wireless network coverage is the combination of wireless –N and Multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) antenna technology. MIMO uses multiple transmitter and receiver antennas to improve the system performance. MIMO technology relies on multipath signals. Multipath signals are the reflected signals arriving at the receiver some time after the line of sight (LOS) signal transmission has been received. MIMO technology combined with the wireless –N creates robust signals for maximum range and speed with reduced dead spots. Some manufacturers embedded their product with their own competitive technology for better network coverage. For example D-Link introduces Extreme –N technology to provide the speed up to 14x faster and provide 6x the range farther when compared to 802.11g wireless devices. The Best Wireless Network in Security Selecting the best wireless network, you should think about the best security the network can protect against any threats. As a general rule, you should employ a level of security that corresponds to the sensitivity of the data on your network. Unlike wired systems, which can be physically secured, wireless networks are not confined to the inside of buildings. They can be picked up as far as 1,000 feet outside of the premises with a laptop and a gain antenna. This makes WLANs inherently vulnerable to interception. The latest industrial wireless security standard is WPA2. WPA stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access which is a certification program created by the Wi-Fi Alliance to indicate compliance with the security protocol created by the Wi-Fi Alliance to secure wireless computer networks. This protocol was created in response to several serious weaknesses researchers had found in the previous system, Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). The other features you should consider in selecting the wireless devices for the best wireless network is the Quality of Services (QoS) feature which capable of providing the prioritization of the data stream. With wireless routers (without the QoS feature), all wired and wireless traffic, including VoIP, Video Streaming, Online Gaming, and Web browsing are mixed together into a single data stream. By handling data this way, applications like video streaming could pause or delay. With Intelligent QoS Technology, wired and wireless traffic is analyzed and separated into multiple data streams. These streams are then categorized by sensitivity to delay, so applications like VoIP, Video Streaming, and Online Gaming are given priority over Web browsing. This enables multiple applications to stream smoothly to your TV or PC. D-Link introduces Gamer Lounge DGL-4500 with intelligent QoS technology which is designed specifically for gamers in mind. The last but not the least for the best wireless network you can also consider the dual-band feature of the wireless access point and also the wireless clients. With the dual band technology, the wireless devices support 2.4GHz & 5GHz wireless signals at the same time. This allows you to check e-mail and browse the Internet using the 2.4GHz band while simultaneously streaming High-Definition (HD) movies and other media on the 5GHz band. With the best wireless network, it is not perfect if you do not deploy the antivirus software for each of the computers on the network. By Ki Grinsing

I. INTRODUCTION

In our present electricity generation system we waste more than half of its resources. Especially the transmission and distribution losses are the main concern of the present power technology. Much of this power is wasted during transmission from power plant generators to the consumer. The resistance of the wire used in the electrical grid distribution system causes a loss of 26-30% of the energy generated. This loss implies that our present system of electrical distribution is only 70-74% efficient. We have to think of alternate state – of – art technology to transmit and distribute the electricity. Now- a- days global scenario has been changed a lot and there are tremendous development in every field. If we don’t keep pace with the development of new power technology we have to face a decreasing trend in the development of power sector. The transmission of power without wires may be one noble alternative for electricity transmission.

William C. Brown, the leading authority on wireless power transmission technology, has loaned this demonstration unit to the Texas Space Grant Consortium to show how power can be transferred through free space by microwaves. A block diagram of the demonstration components is shown below. The primary components include a microwave source, a transmitting antenna, and a receiving rectenna.

Fig.1 Block of wireless power transmission

The microwave source consists of a microwave oven magnetron with electronics to control the output power. The output microwave power ranges from 50 W to 200 W at 2.45 GHz. A coaxial cable connects the output of the microwave source to a coax-to-waveguide adapter. This adapter is connected to a waveguide ferrite circulator which protects the microwave source from reflected power. The circulator is connected to a tuning waveguide section to match the waveguide impedance to the antenna input impedance.

The slotted waveguide antenna consists of 8 waveguide sections with 8 slots on each section. These 64 slots radiate the power uniformly through free space to the rectenna. The slotted waveguide antenna is ideal for power transmission because of its high aperture efficiency (> 95%) and high power handling capability.

A rectifying antenna called a rectenna receives the transmitted power and converts the microwave power to direct current (DC) power. This demonstration rectenna consists of 6 rows of dipoles antennas where 8 dipoles belong to each row. Each row is connected to a rectifying circuit which consists of low pass filters and a rectifier. The rectifier is a GaAs Schottky barrier diode that is impedance matched to the dipoles by a low pass filter. The 6 rectifying diodes are connected to light bulbs for indicating that the power is received. The light bulbs also dissipated the received power. This rectenna has a 25% collection and conversion efficiency, but rectennas have been tested with greater than 90% efficiency at 2.45 GHz.

II. THE TECHNOLOGIES AVAILABLE

In this remarkable discovery of the “True Wireless” and the principles upon which transmission and reception, even in the present day systems, are based, Dr. Nikola Tesla shows us that he is indeed the “Father of the Wireless.” The most wellknown and famous Wardenclyffe Tower (Tesla Tower) was designed and constructed mainly for wireless transmission of electrical power, rather than telegraphy [1]. The most popular concept known is Tesla Theory in which it was firmly believed that Wardenclyffe (Fig.2) would permit wireless transmission and reception across large distances with negligible losses [2]. In spite of this he had made numerous experiments of high quality to validate his claim of possibility of wireless transmission of electricity (Fig.3). But this was an unfortunate incidence that people of that century was not in a position to recognize his splendid work otherwise today we may transmit electricity wirelessly and will convert our mother earth a wonderful adobe full of electricity.

Fig.2. The 187-foot Wardenclyffe Tower (Tesla Tower)

The modern ideas are dominated by microwave power transmission (MPT, Figure 3) called Solar power satellite to be built in high earth orbit to collect sunlight and convert that energy into microwaves, then beamed to a very large antenna on earth, the microwaves would be converted into conventional electrical power.

III. MERITS, DEMERITS & ECONOMICS OF

WIRELESS TECHNOLOGIES

3.1 Merits

An electrical distribution system, based on this method would eliminate the need for an inefficient, costly, and capital intensive grid of cables, towers, and substations. The system would reduce the cost of electrical energy used by the consumer and rid the landscape of wires, cables, and transmission towers.

There are areas of the world where the need for electrical power exists, yet there is no method for delivering power. Africa is in need of power to run pumps to tap into the vast resources of water under the Sahara Desert. Rural areas, such as those in China, require the electrical power necessary to bring them into the 20th century and to equal standing with western nations. The wireless transmission will solve many of these problems The electrical energy can be economically transmitted without wires to any terrestrial distance, so there will be no transmission and distribution loss. More efficient energy distribution systems and sources are needed by both developed and under developed nations. In regards to the new systems, the market for wireless power transmission is enormous. It has the potential to become a multi-billion dollar per year market.

The increasing demand for electrical energy in industrial nations is well documented. If we include the demand of third world nations, pushed by their increasing rate of growth, we could expect an even Faster rise in the demand for electrical power in the near future. These systems can only meet these requirements with 90–94 %efficient transmission [3, 8].

High Transmission Integrity and Low Loss: – To transmit

wireless power to any distance without limit. It makes no difference what the distance is. The efficiency of the transmission can be as high as 96 or 97 per cent, and there are

practically no losses.

3.2. Demerits

Biological Impact: – One common criticism of the Tesla wireless power system is regarding its possible biological effects. Calculating the circulating reactive power, it was found that the frequency is very small and such a frequency is very biologically compatible [3, 8].

3.3.Economic Impact

The concept looks to be costly initially. The investment cost of Tesla Tower was $150,000 (1905). In terms of economic theory, many countries will benefit from this service. Only private, dispersed receiving stations will be needed. Just like television and radio, a single resonant energy receiver is required, which may eventually be built into appliances, so no power cord will be necessary! Monthly electric utility bills from old-fashioned, fossil-fuelled, lossprone electrified wire-grid delivery services will be optional, much like “cable TV” of today. In the 21st century, “Direct TV” is the rage, which is an exact parallel of Tesla’s “Direct Electricity.”

IV. ADDITIONAL REMARKS

Many concepts, research papers, patents are available on wireless transmission of electricity but most research work were carried out in isolation, so it needs a joint collaborative efforts to get a very useful results on this advanced technology on power transmission for the benefit of mankind globally in future. Whatever the future may bring, the universal application of these great principles is fully assured, though it may be long in coming. With the opening of the first power plant, incredulity will give way to wonderment, and this to ingratitude, as ever before.

The world is still not able to achieve the benefit of the God gifted potential of Dr N.Tesla. People neglected him and his good work. He deserved much better treatment from the tycoons of his age, than to spend the last 40 years of his life in abject poverty. However, he was too much of a gentleman to hold a grudge. Instead, regarding the magnifying transmitter, Tesla wrote in his autobiography, “I am unwilling to accord to some small-minded and jealous individuals the satisfaction of having thwarted my efforts. These men are to me nothing more than microbes of a nasty disease. My project was retarded by laws of nature. The world was not prepared for it. It was too far ahead of time. But the same laws will prevail in the end and make it a triumphal success.” [3, 8-9]. If this has had not been happened, then today we will be in a wonder world of plenty of power using the technology of wireless transmission of electricity.

V. CONCLUSION

The transmission of power without wires is not a theory or a mere possibility, it is now a reality. The electrical energy can be economically transmitted without wires to any terrestrial distance. Many researchers have established in numerous observations, experiments and measurements, qualitative and quantitative. Dr.N.Tesla is the pioneer of this invention. Wireless transmission of electricity have tremendous merits like high transmission integrity and Low Loss (90 – 97 % efficient) and can be transmitted to any where in the globe and eliminate the need for an inefficient, costly, and capital intensive grid of cables, towers, and substations. The system would reduce the cost of electrical energy used by the consumer and get rid of the landscape of wires, cables, and transmission towers. It has negligible demerits like reactive power which was found insignificant and biologically compatible.

Wireless internet connections have many advantages. If you are a businessman and run your own business then WiFi is the best solution to access internet and manage your business when you are away from your desk. Even if you are a common user, wireless connection is a good opportunity to chat to relatives, friends, being able to read your mail letters when you are on your holiday and just surf some interesting sites. Positive and practical sides of wireless networks are mobility, rapidness, security and attainability to distant places.

Over the last years broadband width for Wireless networks has considerably increased. This growth rises due to up-to- date technologies and modern devices like mobile phones, laptops, personal digital assistants, iphones, iPods etc. Network by wireless has become faster and more reasonably priced thanks to progress in the bandwidth arena. Now it can transfer data up to two megabytes per second, as usually in the past it was just one megabyte. Furthermore, wireless broadband connection is more secure than a satellite one due to the fact that the signal does not travel in the process of transfer, but goes straight to the recipient. Also, you are pleased with the wireless connection’s speed while downloading web pages. It is rather easy to check your mail letters as well as send them. Interactive functions. Regarding applications like games, audio-video programs, chats, multimember chats, video-conference calls, local networking or wide area network are rather painless to navigate. On the whole, your computer usage becomes more and more efficient.

Wireless connection for rural users means internet access, high rate and comfort as no need to set up additional wires or lines. By the way, you can install such a wireless internet connection so that you can access it within a one-hundred foot radius. Thus, you can move your laptop freely about the house or have a nice cup of tea in your arbor enjoying internet surfing. Now it is no need to sacrifice internet connection if you want to move to another room. Wireless networks means work well for a businessman. He/she can contact any person anytime and anywhere. This is a big advantage. Almost all new PCs have already installed wireless chipsets that allows you to connect internet automatically. It saves you time and does not involve devices or cables. Also any Bluetooth works simply with the wireless connection. To make our life easier, wireless technology enabled us with a wide range of new and advanced wireless gadgets like wireless microphones, wireless headsets, wireless stereo speakers, computer peripherals, televisions.

I am currently using DSL Router with 802.11N network. So is my notebook.
My notebook is using the Wireless-N adapter as the notebook’s build-in wireless adapter comes with 802.11g standard.

I have been looking around to get a wireless internet camera with 802.11N network. The purpose is to maximise the bandwidth for my wireless internet camera without any lagging of the video signal.

However, currently, on the market, it seems that there is no 802.11N standard wireless internet camera available yet as far as I am concerned.

Most of the internet camera comes with wireless or wired R45 network connection and are in 802.11b or 802.11g network.

I have checked with the Dlink,,Linksys and other distributor and find that there is no offer for 802.11N. SInce I needed the wireless internet camera urgently, I have no other alternative but to purchase the wireless internet camera with 802.11g standard.

I have purchased the Linksys WVC200 Wireless -G PTZ internet camera as showed above. To know more about this product,Click here.

This camera provides both wireless and wired network connection.
It has high quality video, flexible control remotely with Pan, tilt , and zoom.
It works terrific. The price is also quite competitive.

There is not much of video lagging when you control the internet camera remotely from outside of your office provided the camera is connected in the wired network to your router by mean of R45 cable. However, if you connects the internet camera to the router wirelessly, and you try to control the wireless camera remotely outside from office, there seems to be some video lagging problem. The reason why I need to do this is due to my router is not in the same room as the wireless internet camera. Moreover, the room where the wireless camera is doesn’t have the network point (Rj45 socket).

I knew there is no much I could do as there is a limitation of the 802.11g network.
It can only achieve a maximum throughput of 54 Mbytes wirelessly no method how good tuning you can do with the camera resolution and other features.

However, desperately to solve this video lagging’s probem, i checked in the market to see if there is any gadgets that could help to solve this issue.
Then I came cross a product called HomePlug AV Ethernet Adapter from Shiro which eventually solve my problem. It boost up my wireless internet camera signal up to 200 Mbytes which resolve the lagging problem.

This adapter also save you the hassle of the physical network wiring. It can also be use to connect between any network devices ie. printer server, wireless game adapter, wireless camera etc to the router wirelessly.

The adapters work in a pairs.Let assume that the wireless router is in room A and the wireless camera is in room B. In room A, you will connect one end of the adapter1 to the power source.

From the adapter1, link its network connector (using RJ45 cable) to one of your router port. From room B, do the same thing, connect the adapter2 to the power source. From adapter2, link its network connector (using RJ45 cable) to the wireless internet camera.

The adapter is not strictly to be used for router only.Basically, you can connect remotely between any network devices together.

The adapter make use of your in-house power circuit to transforms into a high speed wireless broadband and network backbone for transmission of digital data, voice, audio and video.

In this way, the adapter allows me to connect my internet camera wireless without short chain the bandwidth performance of my DSL network.

The model which I purchase is Shiro HL109E as showed on the right.
I believe there may be some similar product available. However, so far only this product offer the Powerline Networking up to 200Mbps.

Even as you’re reading this, you are probably sitting at a computer that is confined to a particular part of your home, say your bedroom or living room. But, what if you want to use a laptop or computer from anywhere in your house? That’s where a wireless router comes into play.

A wireless router is basically a network device that lets you connect several computers to the internet without using a cable, but by using wireless access points, or WLAN. In essence, wireless routers allow the freedom of several users to be able to access the internet. Plus, wireless routers also free you from messy wires.

Basically, a wireless router works using signals that have the same radio frequency range as the wireless network card installed in the PC. The significant feature of this exchange of signal system is that both the router and the network card function on the same radio frequency range, thus allowing the transmission of data to and fro, between the devices.

In other words, the wireless router uses radio frequency range signals between devices instead of physical wiring connections to transmit signals. Being an intelligent device, a wireless router can determine whether a signal needs to be transmitted to a local computer on the internet or to the internet.

The signal’s strength is dependent on the manufacturer along with the internet signal strength that the ISP provides. A wireless network has the added functionality of providing security to the network with firewalls, security keys, and so on.

It is not difficult to set up a wireless network. All you need to do is connect the wireless router to your internet connection, and then just set up the drivers in your computer or laptop. You need not worry about anything, because the wireless router that you buy will come along with the drivers, manuals, and CDs, which will help you with the software and driver set up and the configurations.

Clearly, there are several advantages that a wireless router provides. The term ‘wireless’ is what it is all about. With a computer connected to a phone line or a cable, you get the sense of being tethered to a machine that is in turn tethered to a fixture or wall. This entails you sitting at one spot for a long time in order to do your work or access the internet.

But by fixing a wireless router, you can roam about all over your house, or even building, without having to remain connected to a cable modem or phone jack. This way, if for instance you prefer working outside, you will have the freedom to go out onto the deck, without needing to worry about setting up outdoor cables. If you feel like strolling down to your favorite café for a mug of latte, you can head straight there and surf the net while you wait for the brew to be made. These days, even airports allow you to surf the net without wires while waiting for your plane. Simply put, as long as you have a wireless router in place, especially a long range one, you can log on and surf the net practically from anywhere.

Not having to be tethered to a wall is particularly beneficial for employees or self-employed business people. Basically, any location can become your virtual office. With services and stores equipped with wireless routers, it’s easy to set up shop at any convenient restaurant like McDonalds or Panera. And in towns and cities with wireless facilities, access will spell freedom from the confines of a cubicle or tiny office. These days, more and more companies are allowing their employees the option of working from home.

Even as far as the sales force of a company is concerned, they can go from place to place without needing to return to the headquarters. Since the nearest Starbucks can be turned into a virtual office, business updates and sales reporting can be carried out via a laptop or PDA. This will mean more time being spent in the sales effort and less time being spent in the office.

The broadband router wireless VoIP technology is another great innovation. With this device, you can connect to the internet, using any ordinary phone device. You can then make calls to anybody in the world via your internet connection.

So do wireless communications have any drawbacks? Unfortunately, they do. Even though a great deal of flexibility and convenience is offered by this technology, some tradeoffs are there. A wireless network that is shared by all the users of a particular area has less bandwidth. This is felt most often where high-bandwidth multimedia applications or heavy file transfers are used. In addition, it is more difficult to secure wireless networks, plus, the installation of networking wiring to points of access requires coordination and long lead times with some combination of facilities maintenance and OIT. Hence, if you are thinking of going in for a wireless router you need to take the drawbacks into consideration.

Before buying a wireless router, it is best to check out the reviews about various brands in the market. There are many reliable and well-known brands such as Belkin wireless router, Netgear wireless router, and Linksys wireless router. Check out online to see which one will suit your needs, whether at home or in the office.

Wireless routers make life far more convenient and easier. You can go anywhere, without being restricted by wires and still be able to access the internet.

Okay so your looking for information on making a desktop PC wireless. You’ll be happy to know that just about any desktop PC can support a wireless internet connection. Even older desktops can connect to the internet via a wireless internet connection.

First, make sure your desktop PC is in good working order. What I mean by good working order is just to make sure the desktop PC is free of unwanted spyware and other harmful files which could make a desktop computer’s wireless connection slow down to a crawl. If you plan on making an older desktop PC wireless then you should really scan your computer for spyware and infections because the last thing you want is something stealing all your system resources when you don’t have very much to begin with.

WHATS NEEDED TO MAKE DESKTOP PC WIRELESS

Let’s start by assuming you already have an internet service (not dial-up) and are cruising the web with ease. You should have a cable modem connected to your desktop PC. If this is the case, then you’re ready to begin your wireless setup. If you don’t have an existing internet service and a cable modem then you’d better stop reading this because a wireless internet connection on your desktop PC can’t be accomplished legally without them.

MAKING PC WIRELESS – WIRELESS ROUTER

First, before anything, you need to purchase a wireless router. If you’ve never owned a wireless router before then grabbing the most expensive model probably won’t benefit you all that much unless you plan on receiving a wireless internet connection from inside of a multiple story building. In this case a more expensive router will offer a few features that are worth the extra money.

Remember when you go ahead and purchase a wireless router in hopes of making your desktop computer wireless you’ll be happy to know that you’ll be halfway done with your mission for wireless internet on your desktop. The only thing left is a wireless PC adapter.

MAKING PC WIRELESS – WIRELESS DESKTOP ADAPTERS

It’s actually very easy to add a wireless desktop adapter to your comupter’s arsenal of computing tools. There are two different types of wireless networking components that you can choose from. They are as follows.

1. Wireless USB adapter

2. Wireless PCI adapter

*both wireless devices are packaged with a setup CD-ROM which quickly installs everything needed to configure and use your PC’s wireless internet connection.

A wireless USB adapter is the easiest way to make a desktop PC wireless. The cons of using a wireless USB adapter are the signal strength which is considerably weaker than a wireless PCI card. Most people experience no problems with signal strength as long as they stay within range of the wireless router that’s sending out the wireless signal.

Basically, installing a wireless USB adapter plugs into any available USB port. In reality, it only takes a matter of seconds to plug in a USB adapter and start using the internet without the wires.

The second wireless device that can make desktop computers wireless is called a wireless PCI (PCI = white slots inside a computer) card adapter. This device enables high performance wireless connectivity for your desktop PC with extended range.

Installation is not as hard as you might have thought. Simply remove the side panel from your desktop PC and insert the wireless PCI card into any one of the white slots inside. There is only one way the card can be installed. Reading the directions that are included when you purchase your wireless networking device is by far the best thing you can do to ensure a smooth installation and launch of your wireless connection.MAKING DESKTOP PC WIRELESS

MORE WIRELESS HOW TO INFORMATION

In the future I will most likely go into further detail about each networking component.

Wireless technology depends on wireless access points or a wireless router to send and receive these signals wirelessly to and from a laptop through the wireless device attached to it. A practical distance limitation exists between a laptop’s wireless connection interface and the nearest wireless router or wireless access point for wireless technology to work.

Laptops can be used to access the Internet and connect to Bluetooth enabled devices and wireless office networks wirelessly. Wireless technology uses RF signals transmitted over air. A wireless device is attached through a laptop wireless connection interface to a laptop.

In the case of both wireless Internet access and wireless access to a wireless office network from a wireless laptop, this distance limitation is normally 300 feet.

This can be extended through an external wireless RF signal booster antenna attached through a suitable interface on a laptop to about 3 miles. This antenna can also be termed as a laptop wireless booster. The wireless antenna uses signal gain control technology to extend the range of transmission of RF signals.

The wireless LAN or wireless LAN card alternatively on the laptop needs to be switched on and correctly configured as some of the prerequisite conditions for this connectivity.

An option for laptop wireless connection to the Internet can be an external USB wireless modem attached on a USB port of a laptop.

Bluetooth technology is a special application of wireless technology. It uses short-range RF signals at 2.4 GHz to achieve wireless signal transmission within a distance ceiling of 10 meters.

Through Bluetooth technology, a laptop equipped with an integrated Bluetooth adaptor (laptop wireless connection interface) can be wirelessly connected to Bluetooth enabled cellphones or barcode readers or to a Bluetooth base station within the prescribed distance limitation and data or files shared or transferred mutually between the synchronized devices at the two ends of the connection..

For the above to be achieved in practice, Bluetooth adaptors on devices at both ends of the connection need to be switched on and the necessary password permissions assigned on these devices.

The major advantage of a laptop wireless connection is ‘on the move’ seamless connectivity to the Internet, to wireless office networks, and to similarly equipped Bluetooth devices from a laptop. This provides convenience and independence to a mobile laptop user.

The benefits of a laptop wireless connection are manifold. Some of them include complete avoidance of unwieldy, expensive, and problematic wired connectivity on a laptop to achieve the same tasks, and wireless connection sharing facility among two or more laptops.

In the case of wireless connectivity to an office network from a laptop, wireless LAN on the laptop connects to a wireless office network through the internal antenna of an onboard integrated wireless LAN if so available on the laptop or alternatively through the antenna on the wireless LAN card if so available and inserted on the PCMCIA slot of a laptop.
